A Show Like No Other on Earth
Impression West Lake (Yinxiang Xihu, 印象西湖) is one of China's most spectacular live performances — and the only one staged on a UNESCO World Heritage site. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the legendary filmmaker behind the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and the "Impression" series of outdoor shows, it transforms West Lake itself into a stage.
The performers appear to walk, dance, and glide across the surface of the water on a submerged platform just centimeters below the lake. Against the dark silhouette of the surrounding hills, hundreds of dancers in flowing costumes move through mist and light, telling stories drawn from Hangzhou's most famous legends — the White Snake, the Butterfly Lovers, and the romance of West Lake itself.
The result is something between a ballet, a light show, and a dream. Even if you don't follow the narrative (the story is told through movement and music, not dialogue), the sheer visual spectacle is unforgettable. This is not a show you watch — it's a show you feel.
The Stories Behind the Show
The performance weaves together five scenes inspired by Hangzhou's most beloved legends and poems:
- Encounter: A chance meeting on a rainy West Lake bridge — inspired by the Legend of the White Snake, Hangzhou's most famous love story.
- Love: The Butterfly Lovers (Liang Zhu), often called China's Romeo and Juliet — two souls destined to be together across lifetimes.
- Parting: The bittersweet farewell at the lakeshore, drawn from Song Dynasty poetry about lovers separated by duty and distance.
- Remembrance: A meditation on memory and loss, set against the misty hills that have inspired Chinese poets for a thousand years.
- Impression: The grand finale — a celebration of Hangzhou itself, its water, its hills, and its eternal beauty.
Tickets & Seating
The open-air theater is located at the north end of the Su Causeway, on the western shore of West Lake. Seating is divided into three zones:
Zone A — VIP
Front rows, center view. Closest to the water stage. Best for photography.
Zone B — Premium
Center section, excellent sightlines. Best balance of view and value.
Zone C — Standard
Side sections, slightly angled view. Still a great experience at the best price.
Which Zone to Pick?
Zone B offers the best value — you get a centered view without the premium price of Zone A. Zone A is worth it if you want close-up photos or the most immersive experience. Zone C is perfectly fine; the show is large-scale enough that even side seats give a good view. Avoid the very back rows of any zone if possible.
Show Times & Schedule
Season: Mid-March through mid-November (weather permitting). The show does not run in winter.
Performances:
- First show: 7:30 PM (doors open at 7:00 PM)
- Second show: 8:45 PM (doors open at 8:15 PM) — only during peak season (April–October) and weekends
Duration: Approximately 70 minutes, no intermission.
Cancellations: The show is outdoors and will be cancelled in heavy rain or thunderstorms. Ticket platforms (Klook, Viator) will notify you and issue automatic refunds. Light rain usually does not cancel the show — in fact, the mist adds to the atmosphere.
How to Get There
The theater is on the western shore of West Lake, at the north end of the Su Causeway (苏堤). There is no metro station nearby — the closest is Longxiangqiao Station (Line 1), about a 25-minute walk.
- By taxi / Didi: Ask for "Yinxiang Xihu" (印象西湖) or show the driver 印象西湖剧场. The drop-off point is about a 10-minute walk from the theater entrance. Allow 30 minutes from downtown hotels.
- By bus: Bus 4, 31, or 87 to Yuefei Temple stop (岳庙), then a 10-minute walk south along the Su Causeway.
- On foot: If you're staying near West Lake, it's a pleasant evening stroll along the lake shore. Allow 20–30 minutes from the Hubin area.
Insider Tips
- Book 2–3 days ahead: The show regularly sells out, especially on weekends, Chinese holidays (Golden Week, Dragon Boat Festival), and during spring/autumn peak seasons. Walk-in tickets are rarely available.
- Bring a jacket: Even on warm summer days, it gets cool sitting by the water at night. A light jacket or shawl is essential in spring and autumn.
- Don't use flash photography: It ruins the atmosphere and is prohibited. The show is dimly lit by design — use a phone on night mode or simply enjoy the moment.
- Combine with dinner: The 7:30 PM show ends around 8:40 PM — perfect for a late dinner at one of the lakeside restaurants in the Hubin or Nanshan Road area. Most stay open until 10 PM.
- Light rain is a bonus: The show is actually more atmospheric in drizzle. The mist rising from the lake adds an ethereal quality. Only heavy rain causes cancellation.
- Book through Klook or Viator: These platforms offer e-tickets (no need to pick up physical tickets), English-language support, and automatic refunds if the show is cancelled. Prices are the same as buying at the venue.

Impression West Lake vs. Song Dynasty Town Show
Travelers often ask which night show to pick. Here's the honest comparison:
- Impression West Lake is art — poetic, subtle, and visually stunning. It's an intimate experience with nature as the stage. Best for couples, culture lovers, and anyone who appreciates beauty over spectacle.
- Enduring Romance of Song Dynasty (at Song Dynasty Town) is entertainment — louder, more dramatic, with acrobatics, special effects, and a 3,000-seat theater. Best for families, groups, and anyone who wants a big, flashy show.
If you have time for both, do Impression on your first night and Song Dynasty Town on your second. They're completely different experiences and both worth seeing. If you can only pick one: Impression West Lake is the one that's uniquely Hangzhou — you can't see this show anywhere else on Earth.
