Beyond the Lakes and Temples

Hangzhou is famous for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, but when you (or your kids) need a break from temples and tea, the region offers a surprising array of theme parks and day-trip adventures. From a living history park where you can time-travel to the 12th century to world-class amusement parks within easy reach, there is plenty of adrenaline and entertainment to balance out the cultural sightseeing.

Song Dynasty Town (Songcheng)

The most popular theme park in Hangzhou and a genuinely unique experience. Song Dynasty Town is a meticulously recreated Southern Song city, complete with period architecture, costumed staff, traditional craft demonstrations, street performances, and attractions that bring 12th-century China to life. It is part living museum, part theme park, and entirely entertaining.

Highlights include the "Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival" animated digital scroll (a massive 3D projection that brings China's most famous painting to life), street theater performances throughout the day, and hands-on activities where you can try calligraphy, paper-making, archery, and traditional games. The evening spectacular The Romance of the Song Dynasty is the park's signature attraction — a large-scale theatrical production with hundreds of performers, elaborate sets, and impressive special effects including real waterfalls and flooding on stage.

Practical info: Tickets ¥310 (includes the evening show). Open 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM. Located about 20 minutes southwest of West Lake by taxi (¥30-40). Allow 4-6 hours for the full experience including the show. Best visited in the afternoon so you can see the park in daylight and stay for the evening performance. Food inside is expensive — eat before you go or bring snacks.

Is Song Dynasty Town Worth It?

For families: absolutely. Children love the hands-on activities and the spectacle of the evening show. For adults traveling without kids: it depends on your tolerance for themed entertainment. The evening show alone is genuinely impressive and worth the ticket price if you enjoy large-scale theatrical productions. History buffs will appreciate the attention to detail in the recreation. Pure thrill-seekers should look elsewhere — this is a cultural theme park, not a roller coaster destination.

Hangzhou Paradise Park

If Song Dynasty Town is the cultural option, Hangzhou Paradise Park is the pure amusement park alternative. Located in the Xiaoshan district (about 30 minutes from central Hangzhou), it offers a full lineup of rides including roller coasters, a log flume, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and a dedicated children's area with gentler rides. There is also a water park section (open May through September) with slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river.

The park is showing its age in places — it opened in the early 2000s and some areas feel dated. But it remains the best option for families who want traditional amusement park thrills without traveling to Shanghai. Tickets: ¥190 (full park), ¥160 (dry park only), ¥120 (water park only). Open 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM (longer hours in summer). Metro Line 1 to Xianghu station, then a short taxi ride.

Hello Kitty Park (Anji)

Yes, there is a Hello Kitty theme park in China, and it is about an hour's drive from Hangzhou. Located in Anji county, this is an official Sanrio-licensed park and the first Hello Kitty park outside Japan. It is unabashedly targeted at young children (ages 3-10, especially Hello Kitty fans) with gentle rides, character meet-and-greets, themed dining, and endless pink.

The park is well-maintained, immaculately clean, and surprisingly charming even for adults who are not Hello Kitty enthusiasts. The castle, the Ferris wheel with Hello Kitty gondolas, and the live stage shows are the main draws. Tickets: ¥290 (adults), ¥200 (children). Open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (check seasonal hours). The park is in Anji, about 70 km from Hangzhou — accessible by high-speed train to Anji station (30 min) plus taxi (20 min), or direct bus from Hangzhou East Station (90 min).

Wuzhen Water Town

Not a theme park in the traditional sense, but Wuzhen — one of China's most famous ancient water towns — functions as a sort of living museum that delivers a themed experience. Located about 90 minutes from Hangzhou, Wuzhen is a beautifully preserved canal town with stone bridges, wooden houses, narrow lanes, and gondola-like boats poling through the waterways.

The town is divided into two zones: East Gate (Dongzha) which is more authentic and lived-in, and West Gate (Xizha) which is more polished and tourist-oriented with boutique hotels, restaurants, and evening illumination. Both are worth visiting, but West Gate is the better choice for an immersive day trip with dining and shopping. Tickets: ¥110 (East Gate), ¥150 (West Gate), ¥190 (combo). Direct buses from Hangzhou East Station (90 minutes, ¥40-50).
