The View

The City Balcony (城市阳台) is a sweeping observation platform that extends out over the Qiantang River, offering Hangzhou's most dramatic panoramic view. To the west, the Qiantang River Bridge — China's first modern steel bridge, built in 1937 — stretches across the water. To the east, the river disappears into the horizon. Behind you, the Qianjiang New City skyline rises in a wall of glass and steel that transforms from a business district by day into a glowing spectacle by night.

The balcony itself is an architectural statement: a 300-meter platform that seems to float above the river, supported by massive steel columns. Sections of the floor are made of glass, giving vertigo-loving visitors a direct view down to the riverbank below. Benches line the length of the platform, making it a popular evening gathering spot for locals who come to walk, chat, and watch the sunset paint the skyline in gold and pink.

The Light Show

Every evening, dozens of buildings along the Qiantang River synchronize into a massive LED light show — waves, dragons, lotus flowers, calligraphy, and landscapes scroll across the building facades in a 15-minute spectacle. It's one of the largest permanent architectural projection shows in the world, and it's completely free.

Arrive at least 20 minutes early to claim a good viewing spot — the balcony gets crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. The best position is at the center of the platform, facing the buildings across the river. For photographers, a tripod is essential for long-exposure shots of the light show.

Hangzhou International Expo Center

Adjacent to the City Balcony, the Hangzhou International Expo Center is the venue that hosted the 2016 G20 Summit. The building's distinctive curved roof spans 60,000 square meters — one of the largest single-roof structures in China. While the interior is primarily a conference venue, the public areas showcase the lavish design created for world leaders: massive chandeliers, Chinese landscape murals, and a reception hall with a ceiling inspired by the outline of West Lake.

Guided tours (¥30) run on non-event days and take you through the main summit hall, the welcome foyer, and the banquet room. Even if you don't take the tour, the building's exterior is worth a walk-around — the roof garden offers elevated views of the river and city.

The Qiantang River

The river below the City Balcony is the Qiantang River (钱塘江), famous throughout China for the Qiantang Tidal Bore — the world's largest tidal bore, where a wall of water rushes upstream at speeds up to 40 km/h. The best time to see the bore is during the Mid-Autumn Festival (usually mid-September), when the tidal wave can reach 9 meters in height.

For most of the year, the river is calm and the view from the balcony is serene. But the river's power is a constant presence — warning signs along the banks remind visitors that the bore can arrive with little warning, and several viewing areas are specifically designed for safe tidal bore watching.

Best Photo Spots

For the classic shot, stand at the center of the City Balcony at blue hour (just after sunset) when the sky still has color and the building lights are on. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the full skyline. For a different perspective, walk to the east end of the balcony where the platform curves — you can frame the light show with the river in the foreground.
